New Year's Resolution: Organizing My (Real-Life) Closet

Today I actually achieved one of my New Year's Resolutions! I organized my real-life closet, which has been a little bit of a mess for while. Now, when I put together an outfit on the phone I'll know exactly where to pull it from in the closet. Here's what I learned so you can do it too:

1. Do the Laundry

No more procrastinating - today I washed everything! I even took 5 lbs of dry cleaning to the cleaners. You can't organize your closet if half the clothes are on the floor because they're dirty. Plus, you can organize the clothes by clothing type and color as each cycle is completed, which will help you when you put them away.

2. Purge All Unnecessary Objects From the Closet

This probably had the biggest impact on my closet. There was a lot of stuff in there that was just taking up space.

- Wintercoats: Moved to the tiny closet in the living room

- Heavy Rotation Shoes: On the new shoe rack next to the front door

- Laundry Basket: Replaced by a more stylish version so it can be left out in the bedroom

- Trash: In the garbage - I literally found old shoe boxes, dry cleaning bags, and tissue paper in the closet.

- Clothes that don't fit or don't match my style anymore: Donated

- Seasonal Clothes: In a fabric storage bin that slides under my bed

3. Replace Your Hangers

Every single closet makeover article or tv show I've ever seen has said to buy Huggable Hangers - and they were right! They kept everything super neat so my clothes are no longer halfway slouching off my hangers. The result is the closet bar looks like a store rack and the pieces actually take up less space. Remember not to hang up sweaters or jeans - sweaters stretch out and jeans take up way too much space, so fold them neatly and store them on a shelf or in a dresser.

Stylebook Tip: Set Up A Photo Station

If you haven't imported your clothes into Stylebook yet, lay a dark blanket and a light blanket to the side so you can quickly photograph your clothes as you hang them up. If you don't want to snap pics of everything just photograph your most-worn items or items you want to incorporate into your wardrobe more. 4. Use Hooks

There were already little metal hooks along the wall in the closet and I finally put them to use! I put all of the waist belts on one hook and the hip belts on the other. I also added a coat hook from Anthropologie outside of the closet to hold my favorite statement necklaces.

5. Don't Forget About Your Dresser!

Clean that out too! It turns out I've been holding on to loungewear from 8th grade. Once I got rid of everything that was ancient or didn't fit any more I actually had quite a bit of space for sweaters, jeans, and other foldable items.

6. Divide and Conquer

Drawer dividers have seriously changed my life. I turned my top drawer into jewelry storage with an office supply tray. I also bought sock dividers to keep socks and undergarments neat. I even bought larger dividers to keep piles of clothes upright inside the drawers. This will keep me from destroying all my hard work the next time I go searching for my favorite sweater.

It just took a little bit of time and a small budget to change my tiny closet for the better, so I know you can do it too!

How to Backup Your Stylebook Data with iCloud

With the release of iCloud, it's finally possible to backup Stylebook without having to sync with your computer! Below we'll explain how to use iCloud to keep all of your Stylebook app data (your clothing, outfits, inspirations and calendar) safe and sound.

Turning on iCloud Backup

1. First, upgrade your device to iOS 5. If you have an iPhone 4S or if bought your device after October 14, 2011, you're already up to date. Otherwise, just sync your computer with your Mac or PC and follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade to iOS 5.

2. Open the Settings app from your iPhone's home screen and then tap iCloud.

3. Scroll down to the bottom and tap Storage & Backup.

4. In the Storage & Backup screen, slide the iCloud Backup switch to on. Now you're set up! All the app data on your phone will now be wirelessly and automatically backed up to iCloud once a day!

NOTE: Make sure to connect to wifi before you start. iCloud will only work over a wi-fi connection - the iCloud backup won't run with just cell service

Managing your iCloud Backup

1. If you want to make sure that Stylebook will be included in the list of backed-up apps, tap Manage Storage.

2. You'll see a list of the devices you have set up on your iCloud account. Tap the device you're running (in the example image, this is the iPhone).

3. You'll see a list of all the apps on your phone. If you want to save space, turn off apps you don't want to back up. Make sure the switch next to Stylebook is set to on.

How To Photograph A Puffy Coat

Winter is just around the corner — if you're in New York, you know that you can't escape wearing a down jacket to keep warm while running around town. After the jump there are some simple tips that will help you photograph your puffy coat for your Stylebook closet.

Arrange the coat while it's hanging up on a hanger. This will make it easy to give the coat some shape. (I have a waist length coat with a large pillow-like collar and if I lay it on the floor it looks like a blob, so this hanger trick is perfect. )
Leave the coat on the hanger and carefully take it off the rack or hook.
Lay the two down on your backdrop while being careful not disturb how it's arranged
Wiggle the hanger out of the coat and it should be arranged just as if it was hanging up in the closet
Straighten the sleeves
Narrow the waist just a little
Snap the photo and you're done!

28 Days of Outfits - InStyle Magazine Inspiration

I'm totally in love with the story "28 Days of Amazing Outfits" in October's InStyle Magazine. This is the perfect project for Stylebook users, since you can test outfit combinations without dragging the items out of your physical closet. Below are some great tips on how you can use what you already own while figuring out what to buy this fall.

1. Create a closet folder for your "28 Days of Outfits" pieces.

Browse your Stylebook closet and then move items from the magazine's list into your new folder. This will help you figure out what you already have in your closet. I was pleasantly surprised to find out I already had quite a few items comparable to the ones on the list

2. Before you start making a shopping list, figure out how many of the outfits you can make with what you already own.

I was able to use the items I placed in my "28 Days of Outfits" folder to make ten of the looks without even thinking about heading out to the store!

3. Browse the remaining looks to pick out key pieces for your fall shopping list.

Looking at this story helped me figure out that I want a shearling vest, Navajo-inspired cardigan, camel satchel, and pussybow blouse.

Extra Tips:

The story has tiny thumbnails of the pieces used in each look so it's super easy to figure out what pieces to use in your Stylebook outfits
After you've made all of your looks, schedule them on the Stylebook calendar. This will help you avoid wearing repeat items too close together. Now you can look polished every day for a month without even trying ;D

How To Reorder Thumbnails

{If you're like me, you've dreamt of creating order within the subcategories of your digital closet folders. Fortunately, Stylebook makes this easy - it allows you to group items within your subcategories by reordering the thumbnails.

I personally like to color-code my images since I often choose an outfit based on color, but you can reorder them however you like: by cut, style, alphabetical according to designer, etc. Below are a few steps to help you get started. Happy organizing!

Open the Closet tab
Choose a folder (e.g. Dresses) and subcategory (e.g. Cocktail Dresses)
Press "Edit" on the bottom right of the thumbnail screen
Tap and hold the image you'd like to move. Now you can drag it to a new location. Once you've found a new place for it, let go.
Repeat this process until you've reordered everything you want
Tap "Done" on the lower right

How To Create Custom Closet Categories

You can edit, delete, and add new folders (e.g. Tops) and subcategories (e.g. T shirts) to your Stylebook closet. This comes in handy of you want to add a new subcategory to an existing folder or if you would like to add an entirely new folder with its own set of subcategories.

Open the "Closet" tab in Stylebook
Press "Edit" on the upper right
Once the "Edit Folder" screen appears press "+ Folder" on the upper left
Type the name of your new folder (e.g. outerwear) in the dialog box and press save
Tap the new folder name in the folder list while still in edit mode
Once the "Edit Categories" screen appears press "+ Category"
Type the name of your new subcategory (e.g. vests) in the dialog box and press save
Press done
Now you're ready to start adding images to your new folder!

Note: You must add a subcategory to a new folder before you can start adding items

How To Add Pictures From Your Digital Camera To Stylebook

If you have an iPod Touch or if you just want high-quality images for your Stylebook closet, we recommend using a digital camera (see more photo tips here). Below are a series of steps to help you import your images from the camera to Stylebook.

How To Get Your Digital Camera Images From The Camera to iPhoto

Plug your digital camera into your computer and import the images into iPhoto
Create an iPhoto album for your clothing images (This keeps everything organized so they will be easier to find later.)
Eject your camera and unplug it from the computer
Plug your device (iPod Touch/iPhone) into the computer using it's white sync cord
Open iTunes and select your phone in the left column
Select "Photos" from the menu across the top of the iTunes screen
In the "Albums" window check the album where you filed your closet images (Make sure all your other device photos are saved on your computer and all of your other sync settings are correct.)
Press sync
Eject the phone after the sync is complete

How To Get Your iPhoto Images Into Stylebook

Open the Closet tab
Select the folder and subcategory where you want to import the item (for example "Tops" is a folder and "T-Shirts" is a subcategory)
Tap "+ item" on the upper right
Tap "Choose Existing" in the pop-up menu (This will bring up your iPhoto albums that your synced with the device earlier)
Tap the album with your clothing images
Select the image you would like to add
Use the background and manual erase to cut remove the background

You're all done! Your camera image is now in the closet!

I was lucky enough to score the black-and-white knit tank dress from Missoni for Target this morning. Here's how I'm going to wear it for the last days of summer and into the fall.

SUMMER

Lace-up sandals from J. Crew make the look a little flirty, while a sleek silver cuff from Michael Kors balances the busy pattern.

FALL

I'm going to play up the pattern by layering the dress with a knit, patterned sweater. I think it's important to keep this look monochromatic to avoid going too over the top.

How To Delete Outfits, Inspirations, and Closet Items

If you've ever created two similar looks, decided you don't like a particular inspiration, or just wanted to get rid of the example data you have probably wanted to delete an item from Stylebook. This process is super simple:

Open the item you would like to delete by tapping the thumbnail in the closet, inspiration, or looks
Once you are viewing the item at full screen tap the trash can icon on the bottom of the screen
Confirm that you would like to delete the item by pressing "delete" in the pop-up menu

Note that if an item is being used in an outfit you will need to delete it from that outfit first. This prevents you from accidentally deleting items you have used in outfits and moodboards.

Advanced Tip: How To Photograph Shoes

Shoes can certainly be tricky to photograph, but here are a few easy tips:

1. Use a Backdrop:

I like to use an old poster, since it isn't a good idea to put shoes on sheets.

2. Hang the Backdrop:

Make sure the backdrop curves where the wall meets the floor. This will eliminate the horizon line, making it easier for the background removal to do its job.

3. Angle:

There are three classic shooting angles: from the side, 3/4 view, and from above as a pair

4. Shoot at Floor Level:

Get as close to the shoe as you can and it will look more like the images you see in magazines

5. Use a Flash:

This will illuminate all of the shoe's beautiful details!

How To Photograph A Tie Waist Dress

1. Think About How You'll Wear It: In this case, I plan on layering my new trench dress with long sleeve t-shirts, so I made sure to make the arm holes very distinct.

2. Neaten the Collar: Give the collar and lapel a little structure so they don't look sloppy.

3. Watch For details: Make sure defining details, like the zipper on this dress, are visible.

4. Nip The Waist: Slightly define the waist by tucking the sides of the dress in where the belt ties around the dress.

5. Loosely Tie the Belt: There is no need to make a giant bow or to strangle the dress with it's belt. Just loosely drape the tie ends over each other. It will look less distracting and give the dress a more natural appearance.

Fall Shopping Part 1

I went shopping yesterday and although I didn't have a clear game plan in terms of specific items, I did know what style I was going for. Two things helped me figure this out.

The first was my fall inspirations catalog, which came in handy when trying to convey a certain cuts or styles to the sales associates. I'm definitely lured by anything pretty and sparkly, so I was it was nice to have a visual reference that reminded me to stay on track.

The other was a visual wish list of clothing items I saved in the closet that I used to compare to merchandise I actually saw in the store. In the end, I actually found a few pieces that were reminiscent of pieces I've been coveting from street style photos. I even scored a poppy cowl-neck blouse at Ann Taylor that was similar to a shirt I spotted on Hanneli's blog.

How To Photograph Sweaters

During the years I spent working in the art department of a fashion magazine, I picked up on a few tips that anyone can use to easily style their clothes. Here are a few that will help your sweaters look more like the J.Crew catalog and less like laundry on your bedroom floor.

Yes Please!

No Thanks!

1. Think About Fit - Try to arrange the sweater as if it had an imaginary "you" inside of it. For example, if you push up the sleeves on a sweater when you wear it, do the same thing when you lay it out on the floor.

2. Relax A Little - You don't have to stretch the shirt out so that it's perfectly flat. Giving it a more relaxed look can make it appear more natural - just make sure it isn't overly wrinkly.

3. Sleeves - Fold the sleeves at the armpit so they hang naturally and don't splay out to the side.

4. Nip the Waist - Tuck the sides of the sweater in and narrow the shirt a little at the waist.

5. Take Your Time - Arrange your shirt with purpose and care. You'll be much happier with your digital closet in the long run if it has great pictures. Remember: you only do it once but you reap the benefits forever, so take your time!

6. Take One Last Look - Take a look at the pictures before you start on the next image. This way, if you notice a tag sticking out or strange wrinkle, you can fix it without starting all over again.

7. Photograph your clothes as you buy them or whenever you wear a particularly successful outfit. This way, you can take care photographing each item and you'll save time.

Look at the difference five minutes can make!

Fall Shopping Pre-Game: What to Do With Style Inspiration Categories

Before I buy my clothes for the fall I always read the August and Sept. issues of my favorite magazines. This year I'm tracking everything I saw and liked with the Stylebook 4.0 inspiration library. The new library has categories so I can set aside all of the images that are specific to my shopping trip.

I'm a little bit of a psycho when it comes to saving old magazines and tear sheets so I already have my pre-fall inspirations saved. Here is my latest batch from the August issues of Vogue and People StyleWatch. After scanning them, I emailed them to myself and imported them into Stylebook. Then I filed them in a new inspiration category named "Fall Shopping." This gives me a quick reference the next time I'm out shopping. Now if a mustard yellow top or skirt catches my eye I'll actually know what to do with it, so I can go ahead and make the purchase!

How To Create Custom Vacation Looks Category

1) Open the "Looks" tab

2) Press the +
3) Type "Vacation" in the pop-up dialog box

If you want to figure out what individual items you are brining. Create your packing list under the "Closet" tab so you'll know exactly what to bring on your trip. You can temporarily move your clothes into the new categories. Then use those items to plan your vacation outfits and save them under the Sylebook "Looks" tab before you leave. Below are instructions on how to make your own packing list:

How To Create A Packing List

1) Open the "Closet" tab

2) Press the + and create a new top level category called "vacation" by typing in pop-up dialog box

3) Open your new "vacation category

4) Press the edit button on the top right

5) Press the + that will appear on the top left and then type in your sub-catgeories one at a time. For example you may want to add categories like tops, bottoms, shoes, accessories, bags,etc. This will give you a new set of sub-categories that are only for your vacation clothes.

How To Move Clothes To A New Category

1) Open each item and press the folder icon on the bottom.

2) Choose category you want to the item to from the list that will pop-up on your screen

Importing Images: How-To Copy and Paste

Here's how to add images to your closet or iPhoto via copying and pasting. This will be especially useful for those of you with an iPod Touch.

How to add images to Stylebook if you have taken images with your digital camera, posted them online or sent them in an email to yourself

1) Open the email or webpage on you iPod Touch/iPhone

2) Hold your finger over the image until you get a pop-up that will give you the option to save the image (which will save it in your iPhoto gallery) or copy (which will place it on the clipboard)

3) Open Stylebook and select the closet category you wish to add an image to (for example Jackets which is under Outerwear in the closet).

4) Press the plus on the upper right

5) If you want to paste the image from the clipboard press "paste". If you want to select an image you've added to the iPhoto gallery press "choose existing."

6) Once you have selected one of these options your image will appear on the background removal screen. Adjust the tolerance slider until you are satisfied with the background removal.

Top photo tips for taking great pictures!

Stylebook's background slider works best with images that have a solid background that strongly contrasts with the pieces of clothing. (For example, photograph a bright green top on a white or cream background) Below are more detailed instructions on how to get great results.

Use A Digital Camera:
We've posted about this before and it really pays off.

Focus:
Make sure pictures are in focus and clear. The item your want to add to the closet should look sharp.

Keep The Light Bright and Even:
The flash on a digital camera can light your clothes with even light. It also easily eliminates any shadows that may cause problems during background removal. However beware of pictures that have a dark halo around the clothing because of the flash. If that happens turn the flash power up or switch to using bright day light instead.

Use A Contrasting Background:
The background doesn't have to be black or white (although it can be) but it should should be a contrasting color. For example if you have a navy and cream striped sweater, photograph it on a red or green blanket.

Use A Matte Background:
Don't use a background that is reflective or shiny because the highlights in the image may cause problems during background removal, especially if you are using a flash.

Keep The Corners Clear:
It sounds funny but avoid getting any shadows or other objects the corners of the picture...just trust us.

We followed all of those steps to take this picture of a silk dress on an embroidered cream bed spread. Test it out in Stylebook on your iPhone or iPod touch to see how it turned out!

Advanced Tip:
White Balance:
Find the white balance menu in your digital camera's settings. If you are using a flash set it to flash or if you are photographing inside with lamps select tungsten (for traditional light bulbs) or fluorescent (for energy efficient bulbs). This will make the colors in your photograph look more realistic and give you a better background removal.

Great photos are key to building a great digital closet but if you don't have enough time to bother with all of the above tips search the internet for professional catalog photos of similar clothing items.

Now You Can Write and Save Notes! click here to download update

The new version allows you to save notes on clothes, outfits, and inspirations. Just press the the notepad icon (see below) to start writing. This can come in handy if want to:

-remember what size you are in a specific brand

-write down where you saw a wishlist clothing item

-keep track of clothes that stretch out or need special attention in the laundry

-record the website where you saw awesome street photography

-etc.

If you want to avoid photographing images of all your clothing items, try searching the web for images of your clothes. Some online retailers may allow their customers to copy and paste images of their clothing for personal use only. Check the site's terms and conditions to be sure.

If you're surfing the web on your iPhone and see an image that you like, hold your finger on the image. A pop-up menu will appear with the option to copy or save the image. Select copy and then open Stylebook. Choose the appropriate clothing category in the closet and then press the + icon. Select paste from the pop-up menu and the item will be added to your closet.

Edit, delete, or add new categories by pressing the edit button on the top right of the closet or looks pages. Press the minus symbol to delete existing categories, the plus to add a new category, or tap the existing category name to to make changes.

Photo Tip: camera phone vs. digital camera

Adding images to your digital closet is easy but sometimes it is difficult to get a good shot with the iPhone's 1-megapixel camera. One alternative is to use your digital camera and then import the images into iPhoto. This is especially useful for users who have Stylebook on their iPod Touch.

Below are two examples of a jacket photographed on the same blanket under the same light. The first image was taken with the camera phone and the second was taken with a digital camera with the flash on.

Creative Tip:Background Removal

The background removal works on any image with a solid background. Try using images of words, models, or whatever else you can think of! Don't forget background removal is optional. For example in the second picture below we chose not to alter the image of the house. (If you want to keep the background slide the slider all of the way to the right on the background removal screen)
