How to Photograph Jewelry

*If you just bought the item, you can search for a catalog image using the shopping feature of the app, which has over 7,000 different retailers. See a demo video on how to add items from shopping directly to the Stylebook closet
Styling Tips
  • Small Pieces - Use extra scraps of paper in the same color as the background to prop up small objects - just make sure they don't have a dark shadow in the photo.
  • Studs - Put a piece of cardboard or foam behind the paper background to stabilize earring posts
  • Bracelets - Photograph your bracelets from the same angle so you can "stack" them inside the outfit editor while making outfits
  • Long Necklace - serpentine the chain like this
  • Rings - Shoot rings from the 3/4 angle like this
  • Delicate Chains - Guide the chain along the bottom of a glass or vase to arrange it in a smooth circle
How To Set Up The Photo
  1. Use a Digital Camera - Jewelry can be very delicate, so you'll want to be able to zoom and focus on the small objects
  2. Make Sure Light Is Even - Take the photos under even daylight and avoid creating shadows (overhead diffused light). Photos should look bright and clear - not muddy and uneven.
  3. Use Paper for a Background - Choose a color that strongly contrasts with the color of the jewelry. White printer paper is perfect because its provides an even matte background, which is important for background removal
  4. Take a Cue from Catalogs - Check out online catalogs like Charm&Chain for ideas on how to arrange your bracelets, earrings and rings.

How To Edit The Images
  1. Background Slider - Slowly move the slider to the left until you have removed the maximum amount of the background without eating into the object.
  2. Tap To Erase - To remove the center of an object (like a necklace), press the manual edit button and then select Tap. Tap the area you'd like to erase. If too much is taken away adjust the tolerance using the slider. You can use this in any area you'd like to erase, including shadows and cutouts.
  3. Follow up with the eraser To clean up any stray pixels, switch to Move mode to zoom and navigate around the image

Outfit Editor Tip
  1. Double tap jewelry items while in edit mode and choose "Manual Resize"
  2. Slide the slider to change the object's size. This will allow you to make the objects very small on the canvas so they look proportional with your clothes.

I just did this yesterday. The "tap to erase" is so handy. I also love to find recently purchased items in the Stylebook Closet. The photos are way better than I could ever produce.

Great tip! I didn't know about the tap and erase feature. A big time saver!
